Dr. Mindy Howard's trip to Chicago was more than a visit; it became a powerful reminder of what’s possible when women who have shaped space exploration come together to inspire the next generation. With Dr. Mindy Howard, our Founder & CEO, present for every conversation and connection, the weekend offered a rare chance to engage directly with trailblazing astronauts and leaders committed to expanding opportunity. From intimate discussions to unexpected moments of shared purpose, the experience reignited Cosmic Girls' deep sense of mission. What follows is a firsthand reflection on the people, moments, and sparks of inspiration that continue to guide our work.
"My recent trip to Chicago felt like stepping into a moment of history and possibility at the same time. I’m deeply grateful to Ann McIlrath Drake and her remarkable team for hosting such a meaningful gathering at Lincoln Road — a day that brought together three legendary astronauts, Dr. Mae Jemison, Dr. Cady Coleman, and Dr. Julie Payette, each of whom has carved her own extraordinary path into space. Alongside them were brilliant women astrophysicists, astronomers, innovators, and visionaries who are actively shaping humanity’s future among the stars. Being surrounded by that much brilliance and purpose was profoundly moving.
Meeting these women — hearing their stories, their humor, their reflections — felt like being handed a torch. Each of them has walked through doors that didn’t always open easily, and their presence was a powerful reminder of why Cosmic Girls exists. When girls can see women who have literally reached beyond Earth, something shifts inside them… possibility becomes real. These moments reaffirmed what I believe to my core: that the right role model at the right time can change the entire trajectory of a girl’s life.
Before the Lincoln Road gathering, the Gala the night before brought its own unexpected spark. I met a handful of very influential people who instantly understood the heart of Cosmic Girls. They expressed a genuine interest in our mission and offered to bring our work to their foundation's attention. That kind of recognition — from leaders who care deeply about equity, opportunity, and future generations — was incredibly affirming. It reminded me that our mission resonates far beyond the space sector; it speaks to anyone who believes in opening doors for young people who dream big.
I also learned about Ann Drake’s forthcoming Women’s Leadership Center in Williams Bay — a place designed to lift women into their highest potential. Even hearing about this initiative filled me with excitement for the possibilities: mentorship exchanges, leadership programming, and new avenues of inspiration for our girls. This trip left me with a renewed sense of what’s possible when women support one another, stand beside one another, and believe in one another. Together, we really can build a universe where every girl’s future — no matter where she begins — has room to soar."
